The Coaching Problem:

Most assume that to pass the CSE you have to be up at four in the morning and start studying at five so that they can clock in 16 hours of preparation in a day.
This is not a smart technique. The answer to how much time should be spent on preparing differs from aspirant to aspirant. For instance, if you are more active in the morning, the recommendation is to wake up early and cover the heavy topics first. On the other hand, if you are working professionally the advice is to use any breaks and commute time to prepare for the IAS exam.
Instead of blindly following what everyone else is doing, create a timetable that suits your style of studying and circumstances with the goal of covering the entire syllabus.
The Syllabus Problem:
It is a known fact that UPSC has set a comprehensive syllabus for the IAS exam. It is why many new aspirants feel that it is impossible to study the whole of it even in a year. This is a myth. It is very much possible to prepare the whole syllabus as long as you are dedicated to your studies.
An easier way to prepare the entire syllabus is to go through the previous year’s question papers. When you go through them, you’ll get an idea of how the UPSC asks questions within each section and subsection of the syllabus. Prepare those sub-sections first and most well that are commonly asked. Also, do not forget to study what is currently happening in India and the world, as many questions are oriented towards current-affairs.
The Optional Problem:
The optional subject is worth 500 marks. This is a substantial part of the total tally of scores, and it can boost yours considerably. It is why people say that the optional can play a crucial role in passing the IAS exam. Therefore, a lot of aspirants are confused about which optional subject to pick.
The solution to this task is twofold. First, do not pick a subject because:
- It is very popular among civil test takers.
- Its syllabus overlaps either the Prelims or the Mains syllabus.
- Toppers of previous exams choose it.
There is no single bad optional subject or a good one because each year several IAS candidates clear the exam with several optional subject choices. The trick to making the decision is:
- Spend a few days on two to three optional subjects before picking a final one.
- Go through the syllabus of all of them and check if you understand it.
- Find out if you are comfortable spending long hours studying it each day without getting bored.
- Check if there is enough study material available on the subject and if you have joined coaching, then do they teach it.
