Although it may sound like a cliché, Revision is a very important aspect of study for any type examination. The concept holds greater importance when it comes to IAS aspirants, who are preparing for one of the toughest open competitive recruitment tests in the world.
Among many challenges put forth by the Civil Services Exam Aspirants, the key has been the lack of time and extensive syllabus that covers every nook and corner of the respective subjects. However, these challenges can be easily tackled with the help of a well structured and organized IAS Study Revision Strategy.
Just like study techniques, there is no fixed revision format or method that will help you crack the IAS exam, you will have to design and build one that suits your needs. As an aspirant, you should build a revision strategy that follows your study pattern and fits in well with the overall IAS preparation process. Your IAS revision strategy should help you to achieve your study goals in the best possible way.
We have listed down a few IAS Revision Tips, to help you create a holistic revision strategy for your IAS Exam preparation.
1. Make Revision Notes
The majority of IAS aspirants have the habit of making extensive notes that help them understand subjective concepts and compiled important information to be referred in future. While this is a very good practice, one thing you should keep in mind for revision is the time constraint. Try to make short and crisp IAS revision notes. This will help you complete your revision with ease in comparatively less amount of time. Another tip that you can employ is to use abbreviations and short names/forms to compile long notes or complex concepts in few words.
2. Spread your Revision time through the day
Instead of allocating one single slot for revision for entire day’s study, try to build two or three revision slots through the day. Revising all the topics at once can have an adverse impact with concepts from two different topics being mingled together in your mind. So dedicate revision slots according to the topics in different time slots.
3. Create a To Do list
To build a great IAS revision strategy, create a ‘To do list’ consisting of the topics and subjects that you need to revise for the day. Allocate time slots for these revision topics according to their importance, complexity and mark allocated for the exam. To Do List will help you keep a check and complete your revision tasks with ease within the stipulated time limit.
4. Set subjective / topic wise priorities
Covering all the topics that you study during your 10-12 hour study session through the day in two-hour revision slot is very difficult. Therefore, narrow down the important topics from the syllabus and focus your revision upon those topics. You can shortlist such topics on the basis of marks allocated to them in the exam pattern for IAS exams.
5. Use Technology
IAS aspirants are often pressed for time and most often they end up compromising their revision time. To avoid this, you should use technology. Use mobile phones or tablets that you carry to and from your Coaching classes to revise important topics. It will help you use your travel time in the best possible manner. In addition to this, you can also refer to educational videos to understand complex problems in limited time with the help of technology.
6. Mock Tests
As IAS aspirants, no one should have to tell you the importance of IAS Mock tests. These tests are designed on the exact same examination pattern as used by UPSC to prepare the civil services examination paper. Therefore, Mock tests will help you evaluate your preparation and tell you which topics or subjects need revision.
7. Quizzes
Many times during revision you feel that you had covered the topic well during your study hours and that it didn’t really need a complete revision session. In such cases, you can use Quizzes or solve questions from that topics to actually assess your preparation and if required devote time for revision accordingly.
8. Three Tier Revision Method
This is one of the most successful revision methods employed by IAS aspirants in the past. If you try to revise a topic on the same day when you study it, chances are that you will find it very easy to understand and revise. However, if you revisit the same topic after a day or at the end of the week, you may have forgotten some of it. Therefore, many successful IAS aspirants have recommended following a three tier revision method. Under this method, aspirants are required to revise a particular topic firstly on the same day, a second time after three days and the third time at the end of a week. This will help them keep the topics refreshed in their memory for longer time periods.
By following these tips, any student preparing for IAS exam will be able to build a proactive revision plan for their IAS preparation strategy.
